Minnesota Destination ImagiNation DI High School Lettering Criteria

Many high schools in Minnesota award academic letters for participation in the Destination ImagiNation program. The lettering criteria listed below is used by various schools throughout the state/nation.  We are including it as a guideline for high schools that would like to enable DI participants to earn varsity letter.  We strongly suggest you work with your school administration to develop your own lettering criteria.

General Lettering Criteria

  1. Time Commitment - Attendance at team meetings, practices, and responsibilities outside of practices. The coach will be responsible for keeping a record of each participant.

  2. Public Performance - Attendance at competitions is mandatory. Other public performances may be requested.

  3. Student Registration - All students must be registered at the main office, have paid the designated activity fee, and be subject to all school activity rules concerning attendance, grades, use of chemicals, etc.

WBL Lettering Policy for Destination ImagiNation

Any student who participates on a Division III Destination ImagiNation team will earn a varsity letter with the accumulation of 125 points and the coach's recommendation. Points may carry over to the next year. Points are earned in the following manner:

Time Commitment Points
1 point For each hour at team practices or work outside of practice.
(Requirement: Parents must write/sign a note that indicates the DI-related work being done at home
and the number of hours spent working on the project.)
5 points Participation in competition.
(This is mandatory. Failure to participate in the competition will exclude students from earning a letter.)
Achievement Points
5 points Region Champs
3-5 points Place in Top Three at State
5 Pts: 1st, 4 Pts: 2nd, 3 Pts: 3rd
5 points Participation at the Global Finals
5-10 points Place in Top Ten at the Global Finals
10 Pts: 1st, 8 Pts: 2 to 4th, 6 Pts: 5 to 7th, 5 Pts: 8 to 10th
Exceptional Contribution Points
(Given at the discretion of the coach - not every team member will earn these points.)
0-15 points Leadership, sportsmanship, cooperation
1-15 points Outstanding contributions to the solution/creative effort
2 points Participation in DI fund-raisers
2 points Participation in information/recruitment sessions

Lettering Awards

Varsity letter: 1st time student letters, they're given a letter for their letter jackets
Special awards/bars available: DI insignia, Region Champs, State Champ, Global Finals
